‘Modelling the role of non-admitted care and its relationship to hospitalisation to guide system improvement for people living with dementia’ Project.
Background
People living with dementia experience considerable challenges when trying to get the best health care to meet their needs. The healthcare system can be difficult to understand, and there may be long waits to access services. The benefit of community care is not always clear for people with dementia or their carers. Access to timely and appropriate health care to manage dementia symptoms and any other health conditions can help maintain health and may reduce the need for unplanned hospital visits.
The Study
Led by Dr Luise Lago, the study – ‘Modelling the role of non-admitted care and its relationship to hospitalisation to guide system improvement for people living with dementia’ will explore health service use in and out of hospital, and compare service use by people with dementia and those without dementia.
We will provide information to local health services, consumers and carers on whether people with dementia in the Illawarra Shoalhaven region have been receiving the health care they need, in particular health services outside of hospital.
The Advisory Group
We are establishing an Advisory Group to support the research team. We will be asking for advice from the group as the study progresses. This will assist in planning improvements to services in the region. We would like to ensure the identified areas of need reflect patient and carer experiences; and that findings help inform good policy across agencies and the local community.
In acknowledgement of the time and effort to be involved, each Advisory Group member will be reimbursed $100 per advisory meeting attended.

Who are we looking for?
We welcome interested individuals with an interest and experience to participate in our
Research Advisory Group, including:
People aged 65 or over who have dementia
Carers of older people with dementia
Service providers (e.g. residential aged care, community care, allied health) with experience in aged care & health who are interested in using data to inform policy.
