Social isolation and dementia: How COVID-19 has impacted Australia’s loneliest

As part of Dementia Action Week, IHMRI is hosting a webinar on loneliness and how it’s impacting people with dementia. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, one in four Australians expressed feelings of loneliness. Throw dementia and a global pandemic into the mix and the feeling of isolation has increased due to a lack of connection with others, enforced social distancing and the stigma around dementia.

You can register to the webinar for free HERE

Date: Wednesday 23 September
Time: 12.30pm – 1.30pm
Venue: Online via Zoom

This webinar is designed to support everyone impacted by dementia, from patients to carers, family members and culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. The content of the session will provide guidance on ways to cope with these changes and stay connected at the same time. Hear from:

  • Val Fell, long term dementia care advocate who will kindly welcome us all to the webinar
  • Professor Victoria Traynor about her dementia research at the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI)
  • Amy Montgomery, a nurse practitioner with South East Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) about professional care in dementia
  • Patricia Laranjeira, from Multicultural Communities Council of Illawarra (MCCI) on practical advice on how to support each other during this pandemic.

The webinar will offer you a chance to ask questions to our panel. If you would like to submit questions before the webinar or if you need help registering, contact IHMRI’s Community Engagement and Events coordinator, Kate Brett at kbrett@uow.edu.au or 02 4221 5927.
